Nos enfrentamos a un trabajo diverso y ameno sin perder un ápice de la furia Black, desde el desbordante caos sónico de los dos primeros temas, «We Prefer to Die (Better Than Being Slaves)» y «I Spit On Your Grave», llegando a ese inicio acústico de la machacante «In The Name Of The Lord», la plúmbea «A Perfect Circle», o la fulgurante «The Suffering Of Mankind», para llegar al final en un recorrido donde la frase «canción de relleno» carece de sentido a «In The Hands Of Charon», cerrando el círculo en torno al ancestral Black con el pago de una moneda al Barquero. Resumiendo, en su particular guerra con los Dioses hay que decir que esta primera batalla la han ganado sin hacer prisioneros.

The very fact that metal is as widespread as it is across the globe is a very fun thing because we get to see bands from more well-known places like Sweden to the US and lesser-known like Chile and India have material that’s more than worth diving into. Spain doesn’t get as much credit as it deserves as it has a wide variety that everyone can find something to latch onto whether it’s scathing black metal or pulverizing death metal or just about anything else. With their debut album, Deviltook brings further glory to the Spanish black metal scene in ten unyielding tracks.

Invariably it continues at high speed, the transitions between the riffs are started completely unexpectedly and it rages out of the speakers with full hate. The bass guitar is nowhere to be found and that is also consistent with the sound from the early 1990s. From a production point of view, At War With Gods sounds extremely gritty. The band clearly aims for an old-school sound and succeeds well.

“At War with Gods” es un ataque directo hacia la religión y las creencias cristianas, temática que se repite en las distintas pistas. El black metal de DEVILTOOK tiene un sonido crudo y arcaico, pero sin ser ininteligible. La batería toma el protagonismo respaldada de los demás instrumentos de cuerda en un alarde de agresividad. Los shrieks se clavan como uñas en la carne, desgarradores y agudos, siendo la guinda que adorna el pastel. En este trabajo encontramos temas rápidos, en los que el doble bombo parece un verdadero terremoto como en “We Prefer to Die (Better than Being Slaves)” y “The Suferring of Mankind”.
